Dr.Prerna Singla

When did you start writing?

I started writing when I was 9 yrs. old. That was when I wrote my first poem (smiles).  By 11 yrs. of age, I started writing articles on life and philosophies on life and death. My initial writing was in my mother tongue ‘Hindi’ and since the digital age had not yet begun here, my writings were hand written. Soon, I started writing in English as well. My first English language write was an essay I wrote as a child, in a contest, which I later won. But those eventful years marked the beginning of my creative art of writing.

When you were first published?

I was first published as an Editor of Hall of Poets Magazine, which was founded by myself. In year 2016, I was again published as the Chief Editor of a global Anthology on love and life by a Gujarat based Publisher. My first solo book (‘The Crown of sekhmet’) as an author was published in 2016, by The Poetry Society of India, which is a collection of my poems. My second book ‘The Bible of Marriage’ was published in the year 2017, which is a non-fiction about relationships and relationship problems in marriage.

Describe ‘Prerna’ in day to day life?

‘Prerna’ in day to day life is someone who is almost always busy working, and at the same time takes a few moments off to slip into the world of her imagination and poetry. She is a girl who is in love with everything about life and nature. Even a rain could make her happy, but everything exists while she is busy working. In evenings, she is someone who enjoys listening to good music, or a good intellectual chat with friends, or even playing with her Labradors. In short, Prerna is someone who dwells everywhere, in every part and every moment of life, but at the same time dwells nowhere.

What are your hobbies apart from writing?

I love everything creative (thanks to my parents who encouraged me to do everything I want to); so my hobbies include – music, writing, singing, dancing, travelling, photography,  playing instrumental music, arts and crafts or making something new, karate and even painting. I love learning a new art or a new language and meeting different kinds of people in the world. I am curious creature, you see. (Laughs).

Tell us more about your books?

My book ‘The crown of Sekhmet’ is a bilingual collection of my poetry, written in English and Hindi languages. It includes some of my earliest works.

My second book ‘The bible of Marriage’, is a real life book on relationships and relationship problems and potential way-outs to solve things that go wrong, written from factual, psychological, medical as well as legal perspectives,  along with statistics and inspired by the stories shared with us, by various couples about their marital lives. It covers every possible topic that can affect relationship of a couple; viz, Dowry, Domestic violence, physical intimacy in relationships,  gay marriages, impotence,  sexual incompatibilities,  infidelity in relationships,  live-in relationships, divorces, management of budgets in a married life, alcoholism, etc. The book is written in such a manner, that it can provide guidance to the ones seeking help, and also a knowledge base for a general read.

How do you manage your writing time?

There is no writing time when I write. Thoughts come and I scribble them down. Everything else can wait.

What do you think of modern day relationships?

Of modern day relationships I think that love is a word most coveted, but rarely known, understood or achieved.

What do you think about cheating in relationships?

I think the people who cheat are worthy of capital punishment if they want their partner to be as loyal as a slave.

How important physical intimacy is in a relationship?

Physical intimacy in relationships is the most important part (As I mentioned earlier, I have also discussed this in detail, in my book – The Bible of Marriage). I would say that physical intimacy is the breath of a relationship.  The former dies the later dies too.

Your favorite writer and why?

My favourite writer is ‘Mahadevi Verma’ (for Hindi writes). She picks the subject and scenario in such a manner and so delicately that the essence of life is retained in the heart of the reader.

My favourite English writer is Oscar Wilde. He is simply the best … 🙂

What are your upcoming projects?

In the writing field, I am at present working on three fiction novels and one non-fiction book, as an author.

As an Editor, I am about to finish with an anthology project and start with three book editing projects.

As a reviewer, I have some books scheduled for review.

Any tips to the upcoming young generation.

‘Never think that you are not good enough. You are good enough to do everything that you decide to lay your hands on. If you don’t know the language, create one.’

Prerna in one sentence.

Prerna : A wondering wonder.
